International Mother Tongue Day

We celebrated International Mother tongue day in the library on the 21st of February 2013.

Everybody was encouraged to read a book in their own language, or try reading one in another language.

Language helps us communicate!!!!

World Book Day

World book day was celebrated on the 23rd of April in 2012

International Literacy Day

• International Literacy Day is celebrated each year on September 8th.

• International Literacy Day was first observed on September 8, 1967.

• The aim of International Literacy Day is to focus attention on the need to promote worldwide literacy.

• It is estimated that 860 million of the world’s adults do not know how to read or write (nearly two-thirds of this number are women), and that more than 100 million children lack access to education.

• On International Literacy Day, individuals, organizations, and countries throughout the world renew their efforts to promote literacy and demonstrate their commitment to providing education for all.
In 2009 Tina Cowley was the speaker of the day. Tina Cowley developed the unique “Cowley technology assisted learning methods” during her relentless pursuit to overcome her son’s reading problem. The common learning disability ascribed by many experts to a child who appears disadvantaged when compared to his or her peers, the Cowley technology simply identifies as a reading disability. Her research has revealed the overwhelming truth in the assertion that it was a reading disability that had in the past stigmatized so many children as “backward” with an acute learning disability. In developing her technology – assisted methods, she uncovered the associated benefits that now provide the most holistic service extending to:

• School-going children with a reading handicap

• Illiterate Adults

• Pre-school gifted children impatient to forge ahead

• Handicapped people tested as not educable

A lucky draw was done, where five students won stationary packs. A financial management book donated by one of the staff members of Emalahleni was also given to a student doing accounting. Three students were asked to tell other students what they feel is the importance and meaning of Literacy Day. Two students (Malusi Mtsweni and Moses Lehlongoa) were picked as the winners by Tina Cowley, and each won a canon printer sponsored by Incredible Connection.
